 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  are saddened to learn of the death of Lazaro
 4    Diaz of Chicago, who passed away recently; we wish to  extend
 5    our condolences to his beloved wife of 36 years, Judy; and

 6        WHEREAS,  Lazaro Diaz, known affectionately as "Freddie",
 7    was born in Cuba in 1935; his sister Delores brought  him  to
 8    the  United  States,  where  he joined the Seminary; Mr. Diaz
 9    later came to live in Cincinnati, where he joined the  United
10    States Army; and

11        WHEREAS,  After  Mr. Diaz served his country in the Army,
12    he moved to Chicago and studied Mechanical Engineering at the
13    Illinois Institute of  Technology;  it  was  there  that  Mr.
14    Diaz's  landlady  could  not pronounce his name, so she said,
15    "You look like a Freddy", and from then on he  was  known  as
16    Freddy; and

17        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Diaz  was  always  very proud of his Cuban
18    heritage and returned to Cuba in 1960 as  a  reporter  for  a
19    Skokie newspaper to cover the events of the Cuban Revolution,
20    where  he  was  temporarily  detained with many of his former
21    countryman; and

22        WHEREAS, Mr. Diaz was a capable and respected  mechanical
23    engineer,  who  worked  for many years for Litton Industries,
24    and later for S&C Electric in Chicago; in the course  of  his
25    job, Mr. Diaz had the opportunity to travel around the United
26    States  and  the world and find new friends wherever he went;
27    and

28        WHEREAS, The foundation in Mr.  Diaz'  life  was  his  36
29    years  of  love,  laughter,  and  marriage to his wife, Judy;
30    after  their  introduction  by  friends  while  Judy  was  in
31    college, they shared many wonderful moments together; the two

 1    shared their  love  of  music,  food,  laughter,  friendship,
 2    religion,  community,  and  travel together; always the Latin
 3    romantic, Mr. Diaz started each day by saying "I Love You" to
 4    his wife; he also felt blessed to share the  love  of  Judy's
 5    family; and

 6        WHEREAS,   Mr.  Diaz  was  active  in  his  community  of
 7    Edgewater, where he and Judy owned an apartment  building  at
 8    1344 West Rosedale; Mr. Diaz was always proud of his building
 9    and  shared  friendship,  laughter, and many stories with his
10    many neighbors, including his dear  friend,  the  late  Kathy
11    Osterman;  he also could be seen in the community walking his
12    cherished dogs Drambue, Irish, and Alex; Mr. Diaz  brought  a
13    smile to those who knew him; and

14        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Diaz in 1992 had a quadruple bypass, and a
15    month of recovery, and thus had a new  lease  of  life;  from
16    this  event  Mr.  Diaz renewed his faith in the church and he
17    and his wife, Judy, took a more active role in  St.  Gertrude
18    Parish  in  Edgewater; their activity in the church furthered
19    their ability  to  share  their  faith  and  friendship  with
20    neighbors and parishioners; and

21        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Diaz  had  a  kind  word  and  a smile for
22    everyone he met and shared his love of  life  with  his  wife
23    Judy,  family,  and friends; those that shared his friendship
24    will deeply miss this wonderful  man  and  remember  his  big
25    heart and kindness; and

26        WHEREAS,  Mr. Diaz will be deeply missed by all those who
27    knew and loved him, especially his wife,  Judy,  her  family,
28    and his many friends and neighbors; therefore, be it

29        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
30    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
31    we mourn, along with all who knew him, the  death  of  Lazaro
32    Diaz of Chicago, Illinois; and be it further

 1        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
 2    presented to the family of Lazaro Diaz as  an  expression  of
 3    our esteem.
