92_HR1011 LRB9217107BHbh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are proud to congratulate Don A. Turner on 4 his retirement as the President of the Chicago Federation of 5 Labor (CFL) on May 30, 2002; and 6 WHEREAS, Mr. Turner served as the President of the CFL 7 since December 1995; prior to his election as CFL president, 8 Mr. Turner was elected CFL Secretary-Treasurer; and 9 WHEREAS, Working his way through college, Mr. Turner was 10 a member of the Steelworkers Union (USWA) and Baggage 11 Handlers Union (UTU); as a high school business teacher, he 12 became a member of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and was 13 elected union delegate in 1968; he later went on to serve as 14 the CTU's administrative director from 1977 to 1984; in 1984, 15 Mr. Turner was elected CTU's vice president and Illinois 16 Federation of Teachers' vice president; he left to work as 17 Assistant to the President and Project Coordinator of the 18 Chicago Federation of Labor; and 19 WHEREAS, Mr. Turner served as a co-chair of the 20 Chicagoland Labor Management Committee, a unique partnership 21 the CFL and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce established 22 to help resolve shared employee issues in the workplace; he 23 is a board member of the Metropolis 2020 and the Chicago 24 Workforce Board and serves on the Board of Directors of the 25 Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, the Chicago 26 Manufacturing Center, Global Chicago, and Citizens Action 27 Illinois; Mr. Turner also serves as a commissioner of the 28 Public Building Commission, an Advisory Council member of the 29 University of Illinois - Chicago School of Public Health, and 30 a member of the Board of Governors of the Metropolitan 31 Planning Council; he is a former member of the Illinois 32 Economic Development Board and the Governor's Commission on -2- LRB9217107BHbh 1 Educational Funding and he served as a member of Governor 2 Edgar's Trade Mission to Asia and Mayor Daley's Trade Mission 3 to Mexico; Mr. Turner also served as an election observer in 4 Nicaragua in 1989 and represented the AFL-CIO on visits to 5 Poland; and 6 WHEREAS, In regards to his charitable endeavors, Mr. 7 Turner has served as the Labor Chairperson for the United Way 8 since 1995 and served on the Board of Directors for the Red 9 Cross and the Board of Directors of the Boy Scouts of 10 America; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Turner and his wife, Bernadette, a 12 scholarship consultant and former English teacher, have two 13 children, Joshua and Matthew; therefore, be it 14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 15 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 16 we congratulate Don A. Turner on his recent retirement as the 17 President of the Chicago Federation of Labor and wish him all 18 the best in his future endeavors; and be it further 19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 20 presented to Don A. Turner as an expression of our esteem.
