1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are proud to recognize significant events in
4 the lives of the citizens of this State; and
5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Mabel White of
6 Chicago celebrates her 90th birthday on July 20, 2002; and
7 WHEREAS, The youngest of 16 children, Mabel White,
8 formerly Mabel Murphy, was born July 20, 1912, in Athens,
9 Georgia; moving to Chicago, her Christian family became long
10 time, active members of Tabernacle Baptist Church; for many
11 years, Mrs. White served faithfully in the choir and on the
12 Missionary Board; she completed John Farren Elementary School
13 and learned much in the school of life's experiences; and
14 WHEREAS, The birth mother and sole support for her son
15 and twin daughters, Mrs. White labored long and hard as a
16 laundry worker for over 20 years; her devotion to family,
17 friends, and "all of God's children", is the hallmark of her
18 youthful spirit; interested and involved, the trustworthy
19 Mabel White was often selected to serve as treasurer in
20 several social organizations and her 80th and Ada block club;
21 and
22 WHEREAS, Mabel White's family increased from 4 to 8 when
23 she married Henry White and took on two more sons and a
24 daughter; her love for children was richly rewarded when she
25 became the head chef for two nursery schools; supplementing
26 the school's menu at her own expense, Mrs. White would
27 prepare delicious dishes at home; her concern for the welfare
28 of the children was mirrored in her concern for others in
29 need; she would save dimes in order to make weekly
30 contributions to blind men who would come through the
31 neighborhood; and

1 WHEREAS, Some of Mrs. White's favorite activities include
2 dancing, working complicated crossword puzzles, and listening
3 to the soothing sounds of good music, such as Negro
4 spirituals, gospels, jazz, and a wide range of contemporary
5 music; and
6 WHEREAS, Mrs. White resides happily with her daughter
7 Connie and son-in-law, Richard McClellan; in the glow of
8 loving attention from her daughter, Consuella; her son, Alex;
9 and her step-children, step-grandchildren, grandchildren, and
10 countless other family members, friends, and well-wishers,
11 Mabel White is enjoying the fruits of her labors; therefore,
12 be it
13 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15 we congratulate Mabel White on her 90th birthday and wish her
16 all the best in the future; and be it further
17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to Mabel White as an expression of our esteem.
