1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives offer sincere congratulations to the 2002
4 York Community High School Boys Cross Country Team and Coach
5 Joe Newton on winning the Class AA State Championship Title;
6 and
7 WHEREAS, The Dukes won the State boys cross country meet
8 with 125 points, with the assistance of sophomore Sean
9 McNamara and senior Adam Manta who received all-state honors
10 for finishing in the top 25, placing 13th and 23rd
11 respectively; and
12 WHEREAS, Coach Joe Newton, one of the most talented cross
13 country and track coaches in history, has finished his 43rd
14 season with York Community High School, leading the Dukes to
15 a remarkable 22 State titles; and
16 WHEREAS, Under Coach Newton's supervision, the Dukes won
17 their first State Championship Title in 1962; the Dukes have
18 also won 10 second-place and three third-place trophies; and
19 WHEREAS, Sean McNamara, Adam Manta, Matt Montgomery, Eric
20 Dettman, Matt Dettman, Mike Corry, and Josh Sharko came
21 together as a team to win by a 73 point margin; and
22 WHEREAS, We recognize the dedication of Coach Newton, the
23 Athletic Department, and the entire York High School
24 community in their tireless efforts to train and educate
25 superior athletes and well-rounded students; and
26 WHEREAS, The Dukes have given countless hours and all of
27 their energy in reclaiming the Cross Country State
28 Championship; and
29 WHEREAS, This victory is shared with the families,
30 friends, York Community High School, and the entire Elmhurst

1 community, who have cheered on the team all season; and
2 WHEREAS, This title is a source of great pride for the
3 team, school, and community; and
4 WHEREAS, We recognize the talent of these young athletes
5 and their coaches; therefore, be it
6 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8 we do hereby offer our congratulations to Coach Joe Newton
9 and the members of the York Community High School Boys Cross
10 Country Team on their 22nd State Championship Title; and be
11 it further
12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to Coach Joe Newton, York Community High School,
14 and the members of the team.
