92_HR1141 LRB9218400KFkf 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Joe Newton, one of the most successful cross 3 country coaches in the history of the sport, has completed 4 his 46th year at York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, On November 9th, 2002, at Detweiller Park in 6 Peoria, he led the York High School Dukes to an unprecedented 7 22nd State Class AA Championship Title; and 8 WHEREAS, Coach Joe Newton has a rich athletic background 9 of his own, attending Parker High School on Chicago's South 10 Side where he won 12 major letters and in 1947 was named a 11 High School All-American; and 12 WHEREAS, An outstanding sprinter at Northwestern 13 University, he received his Bachelor of Science from 14 Northwestern in 1951 and his Master of Arts from Northwestern 15 in 1952; and 16 WHEREAS, After serving in the Army for two years, he 17 began his coaching career in 1954 in Waterman, Illinois, 18 before moving to York High School in 1956; and 19 WHEREAS, In addition to 22 State cross country titles at 20 York, Coach Joe Newton's teams have won 24 sectional titles 21 plus a State track championship in 2000, York's first track 22 title since 1939; and 23 WHEREAS, Coach Joe Newton has been named the High School 24 Cross Country Coach of the Year sixteen times by the Northern 25 Illinois Track Coaches Association and was honored fifteen 26 times as the Illinois High School Coaches Association's Coach 27 of the Year; and 28 WHEREAS, Coach Joe Newton became the first high school 29 coach selected as an Olympic coach for the U.S. Men's Track 30 and Field Team in 1988; and -2- LRB9218400KFkf 1 WHEREAS, Coach Joe Newton is a Hall of Fame inductee of 2 numerous organizations, including the National High School 3 Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the United States 4 Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Northwestern 5 University Hall of Fame, the United States Track and Field 6 Federation Hall of Fame, the Northern Illinois Track and 7 Cross Country Association Hall of Fame, and the Gatorade 8 Coaches Hall of Fame, among many others; and 9 WHEREAS, Coach Joe Newton has inspired thousands of young 10 athletes to excel both on and off the field; and 11 WHEREAS, Coach Joe Newton's devotion and commitment to 12 his students over the past 46 years has taught us the true 13 definition of the word "champion"; therefore, be it 14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 15 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 16 we do hereby honor the achievements of Coach Joe Newton as a 17 dedicated coach, teacher, and friend to many, and that we 18 offer our sincere congratulations on his 46th year at York 19 High School and 22nd State Class AA Cross Country 20 Championship Title; and be it further 21 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 22 presented to Coach Joe Newton.
