92_SR0087 LRB9208517KBkb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Thomas Cekay, technology editor in 4 the Chicago Tribune business department, who passed away on 5 March 11, 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Thomas Cekay was raised in Mundelein; he 7 attended St. Vincent de Paul High School in Lemont, a 8 Catholic preparatory seminary; he received a Bachelor's 9 degree from Loyola University in English literature and a 10 Master's degree in journalism from Northern Illinois 11 University; and 12 WHEREAS, Thomas Cekay and his wife, Luann Zanzola, met 13 while they were working together on Loyola's student 14 newspaper; they moved to Portland, Oregon, where he worked as 15 a copy editor and freelance writer for the Oregonian; while 16 in Portland, Mr. Cekay wrote several magazine articles on 17 small fishing villages along the Columbia River in Oregon; 18 and 19 WHEREAS, Thomas Cekay worked on the copy desk at the 20 Dayton Journal Herald in Dayton, Ohio before returning to the 21 Chicago Tribune in 1983 as a copy editor; he had first worked 22 for the Chicago Tribune in 1976, working as a reporter for 23 the Suburban Tribune in Oak Brook; and 24 WHEREAS, Thomas Cekay received the Tribune's Johnrae Earl 25 Award for excellence in editing in 1986; he helped edit "The 26 American Millstone" series; the program won a Robert F. 27 Kennedy Journalism Award for outstanding coverage of problems 28 faced by the disadvantaged; Mr. Cekay is also regarded for 29 launching the Internet division of the newspaper; and 30 WHEREAS, Thomas Cekay was a devoted husband and father; 31 he coached youth baseball and soccer teams, and took part in -2- LRB9208517KBkb 1 Boy Scout activities; and 2 WHEREAS, The passing of Thomas Cekay will be deeply felt 3 by all that knew and loved him, especially his wife, Luann; 4 his children, Anthony and Nathaniel; his parents, Robert and 5 Rita; his brothers, Robert, Daniel, John, and Patrick; and 6 his sisters, Maureen Appleton and Mary Eileen Allen; 7 therefore, be it 8 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 10 his many loved ones, the death of Thomas Cekay of St. 11 Charles; and be it further 12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 13 presented to the family of Thomas Cekay.
