92_SR0095 LRB9208590RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends 4 of William J. Devine, who passed away on March 15, 2001; and 5 WHEREAS, William J. Devine was the brother of Cook County 6 State's Attorney Dick Devine; and 7 WHEREAS, William J. Devine was raised on the North Side 8 of Chicago in a large religious family that stressed the 9 importance of academic studies; he graduated in 1967 from 10 Loyola Academy in Wilmette, where he played nose guard for 11 the Loyola Ramblers football team that won city Prep Bowl 12 games in 1965 and 1966; other awards and distinctions that 13 Mr. Devine earned during his high school career include the 14 Robert Skoglund Award for football and scholastic 15 achievement, and becoming one of 10 Chicago-area Catholic 16 high school students to be named a Cardinal Samuel Stritch 17 scholar in 1967; and 18 WHEREAS, Mr. Devine graduated from Harvard College in 19 1971 with a degree in English and received his master's 20 degree in theological studies from Harvard University 21 Divinity School in 1975; he was a teacher and counselor for 22 several years at Sacred Heart School in Chicago and at its 23 sister school in San Francisco, where he taught while 24 pursuing his 1985 doctorate in educational psychology at the 25 University of California at Berkeley; and 26 WHEREAS, After his doctorate work, Mr. Devine practiced 27 psychology in Martinez, California, and authored unpublished 28 plays that drew heavily on Irish and Chicago history; and 29 WHEREAS, The passing of William J. Devine will be deeply 30 felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, P.J. 31 Litz Devine; his sons, Samuel and Benjamin; his daughter, -2- LRB9208590RHrh 1 Kathleen; his sisters, Mary and Eileen; and his brothers, 2 Dick Devine and Bill Springgate; therefore, be it 3 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 4 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 5 all who knew him, the death of William J. Devine; and be it 6 further 7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 8 presented to the family of William J. Devine with our sincere 9 condolences.
