92_SR0114 LRB9208740RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends 4 of Arthur Szold, who passed away on April 8, 2001; and 5 WHEREAS, Arthur Szold was born on February 13, 1919, in 6 Peoria, Illinois, to Jacob and Elsa Freedman; and 7 WHEREAS, Arthur Szold proudly served his country during 8 World War II as a command pilot in the United States Air 9 Force; he retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel; after 10 his discharge, he joined a team of other pilots and 11 established the Illinois Air National Guard Fighter Squadron 12 in Peoria, for which he received the Illinois Outstanding 13 Service Award; and 14 WHEREAS, Arthur Szold was a graduate of Bradley 15 University, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi 16 Fraternity; he also served as a member of the Board of 17 Trustees and of the Bradley Centurions; and 18 WHEREAS, Arthur Szold was the president of Szold's 19 Department Stores, which was founded by his grandfather, 20 Joseph Szold, in 1880; and 21 WHEREAS, Arthur Szold served as a commissioner for the 22 Greater Peoria Airport Authority for twenty-eight years; many 23 of the decisions he took part in have made the airport the 24 success it is today; and 25 WHEREAS, Arthur Szold served as the past president of the 26 Children's Home of Peoria and the Boys and Girls Club of 27 Peoria; he was instrumental in the construction of the first 28 high school swimming pool in Central Illinois; and 29 WHEREAS, In 1976, Arthur Szold chaired the Citizens for a 30 Civic Center Committee to promote the already proposed Peoria -2- LRB9208740RHrh 1 Civic Center; he was later given the neighborhood House 2 Community Service Award for his dedication and work within 3 the Peoria community; and 4 WHEREAS, Arthur Szold was a member of the Peoria Downtown 5 Rotary Club, the Country Club of Peoria, a former board 6 member of the South Side Bank and First Federal Savings and 7 Loan; he also served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church 8 of Peoria; and 9 WHEREAS, The passing of Arthur Szold will be deeply felt 10 by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, Marian, 11 his sons, Dr. Flip (wife, Cindy) Szold and Tucker (wife, 12 Margaret) Szold; and his four grandchildren; therefore, be it 13 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 14 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 15 all who knew him, the death of Arthur Szold of Peoria, 16 Illinois; and be it further 17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 18 presented to the family of Arthur Szold with our sincere 19 condolences.
