 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  Baltic  States  of  Estonia,  Latvia,  and
 3    Lithuania are free, democratic, and independent nations  with
 4    a long and proud history; and

 5        WHEREAS, The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is
 6    dedicated  to the preservation of the freedom and security of
 7    its member nations; and

 8        WHEREAS,  The  Baltic  States  of  Estonia,  Latvia,  and
 9    Lithuania  desire  to  share  in  both   the   benefits   and
10    obligations  of NATO in pursuing the development, growth, and
11    promotion of democratic institutions and ensuring free market
12    economic development; and

13        WHEREAS, Those nations recognize  their  responsibilities
14    as   democratic   nations   and   wish   to   exercise  these
15    responsibilities in concert with members of NATO; and

16        WHEREAS, The Baltic  States  desire  to  become  part  of
17    NATO's efforts to prevent the extremes of nationalism; and

18        WHEREAS,  The  security of the United States is dependent
19    upon the stability of central Europe; therefore, be it

20        RESOLVED, BY THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-SECOND  GENERAL
21    ASSEMBLY  OF  THE  STATE  OF  ILLINOIS,  that  we support the
22    admission of  the  Baltic  States  of  Estonia,  Latvia,  and
23    Lithuania  to  the North Atlantic Treaty Organization; and be
24    it further

25        RESOLVED, That suitable  copies  of  this  resolution  be
26    delivered   to  the  President  of  the  United  States,  the
27    President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate,  the  Committee  on
28    Foreign Relations of the U.S. Senate, the Speaker of the U.S.
29    House  of  Representatives,  the  Committee  on International
30    Relations of the U.S.  House  of  Representatives,  and  each

 1    member of the Illinois congressional delegation.
