 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members  of  the  Illinois  Senate  wish  to
 3    express  their  sincere condolences to the family and friends
 4    of Robert Beart, Sr., who passed away on September 12,  2001;
 5    and

 6        WHEREAS,  Robert  W.  Beart, Sr. was born on November 13,
 7    1917 in Chicago and graduated from Roosevelt High  School  in
 8    1935;  he  later  enrolled  at  Augustana  College  where  he
 9    excelled   both  in  academics  as  a  chemistry  major,  and
10    athletics as a track and football letterman; and

11        WHEREAS, Mr. Beart served as a meteorologist and  weather
12    officer  to  General  Curtis  LeMay  during World War II; Mr.
13    Beart participated in the weather  forecasting  that  allowed
14    the United States to bomb both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan;
15    and

16        WHEREAS,  After  returning from the war, Mr. Beart worked
17    at  Illinois  Tool  Works,  Inc.  as  a  metallurgist   while
18    completing   classes   at   Chicago-Kent  Law  School;  after
19    graduation, he went to work in his uncle's law firm of  Olson
20    and  Trexler, which represented Illinois Tool Works, Inc.; he
21    subsequently became General Counsel to Illinois  Tool  Works,
22    Inc.  and later a director; Mr. Beart was considered a pillar
23    to the technlogy-based business at Illinois Tool Works,  Inc.
24    due  to his outstanding contributions; he was instrumental in
25    developing the technology base that the  company  now  enjoys
26    due  to  his  heightened activity in patenting inventions and
27    protection against infringement of the company's intellectual
28    property; and

29        WHEREAS,  In  addition  to  his  degrees  from  Augustana
30    College and Kent College of Law, Mr. Beart  also  attained  a
31    Master of Law degree in patent law from The John Marshall Law
32    School; and

 1        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Beart  and  his wife, Helen, had long been
 2    active in charitable activities and  community  affairs;  Mr.
 3    Beart  served  as  chairman  of the board at Lutheran General
 4    Hospital, as president of Illinois Lutheran Social  Services,
 5    on the Board of Overseers at Kent College of Law, as chairman
 6    of  Park  Ridge  School  District  #207,  and as president of
 7    Lutheran Mutual Insurance Company of Waverly, Iowa,  now  the
 8    CUNA  companies;  in  addition,  Mr.  Beart and his wife were
 9    supporters of the Uhlich Children's Home, The  John  Marshall
10    Law School, and Lutheran Home and Services for the Aged; and

11        WHEREAS,  The  passing  of  Robert  W. Beart, Sr. will be
12    deeply felt by all those who knew and loved  him,  especially
13    his  wife of 58 years, Helen; his children, Dr. Robert W. Jr.
14    (wife, Cindy) Beart and Beth J. (husband, George) Drost;  his
15    grandchildren,  Julie  (husband,  William) Hibler, Michael T.
16    (wife, Kaitrin) and Charles  Drost,  Jennifer  Beart,  Kristi
17    (husband,  Bryce)  Barns,  and Amy Beart; his great-grandson,
18    John W. Hibler; and his sisters, Grace Juel, Ruth  York,  and
19    Helen (husband, Mark) Thomas; therefore, be it

20        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
21    ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along  with
22    all  who  knew  him,  the  death  of  Robert W. Beart, Sr. of
23    Arlington Heights, Illinois; and be it further

24        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
25    presented  to  the  family  of  Robert W. Beart, Sr. with our
26    sincere condolences.
