92_SR0277 LRB9211299RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends 4 of Chester "Jack" Winter, who passed away on October 29, 5 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Mr. Winter, a longtime Downers Grove resident, 7 was the former editor and publisher of the Reporter/Progress 8 newspapers; and 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Winter's grandfather, Christian Staats, and 10 his family moved to Downers Grove in May 1897; Mr. Staats 11 purchased the Downers Grove Reporter in 1907 and was joined 12 by Mr. Winter's father in 1924; Mr. Winter joined the paper 13 in 1950; and 14 WHEREAS, Mr. Winter and his wife, Pat, expanded the 15 business into the Reporter/Progress Newspapers and Printers, 16 publishers of the Downers Grove Reporter, Westmont Progress, 17 Woodridge Progress, Clarendon Hills Progress, Darien 18 Progress, Willowbrook Progress, Lisle Reporter, and Lemont 19 Reporter; the Winter family sold the company to Liberty 20 Suburban Chicago Newspapers in 2000; and 21 WHEREAS, During his time at the paper, Mr. Winter served 22 as reporter, editor, and publisher; he wrote a weekly column, 23 "Winter's World" until the business was sold; and 24 WHEREAS, Mr. Winter and his wife were founding members of 25 the DuPage Publishers Association; he was also a member and 26 director of Suburban Newspapers of America, where he and his 27 wife received the groups highest honor in 2000, the Dean S. 28 Lesher Award; and 29 WHEREAS, A combat medic with the 104th Infantry Division 30 of the United States Army, Mr. Winter served in Northern 31 France, Rhineland, and Central Europe during World War II; -2- LRB9211299RHrh 1 therefore, be it 2 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 3 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 4 all who knew him, the death of Chester "Jack" Winter of 5 Downers Grove, Illinois; and be it further 6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 7 presented to the family of Chester "Jack" Winter with our 8 sincere condolences.
