92_SR0285 LRB9211859RHrhA 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends 4 of Anthony Vacco, Sr., who passed away on January 4, 2002; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, A political powerhouse in the South Suburbs, 7 Anthony Vacco, Sr. was an eight-term mayor of the Village of 8 Evergreen Park whose name became synonymous with Evergreen 9 Park; and 10 WHEREAS, Anthony Vacco's political career began in 1956 11 when a precinct captain asked him to hand out "I Like Ike" 12 fliers for President Eisenhower's reelection campaign; when 13 the precinct captain retired in 1957, Mr. Vacco assumed the 14 position; and 15 WHEREAS, Mayor Vacco was appointed to Evergreen Park's 16 zoning board in 1961; after one term as trustee, he was 17 appointed mayor in 1968 and served for eight terms, retiring 18 in 2001; and 19 WHEREAS, Some of Mayor Vacco's many accomplishments 20 include the paving and curbing of Village streets, 21 constructing a new firehouse, softball fields and ice rink at 22 82nd and Kedzie Avenue, and "establishing and maintaining a 23 fine residential community where people were proud to live 24 and wanted to move to"; Mayor Vacco stated that his greatest 25 mayoral achievement was the day the United States Postal 26 Service finally awarded Evergreen Park its own ZIP code after 27 a 20-year campaign; and 28 WHEREAS, After his retirement as mayor, the Village of 29 Evergreen Park unanimously appointed Mayor Vacco as the 30 Village's part-time intergovernmental and community 31 development liaison officer; and -2- LRB9211859RHrhA 1 WHEREAS, Mayor Vacco also served as chairman of the 2 Southwest Council of Mayors for 25 years until his retirement 3 in 2001; and 4 WHEREAS, Mayor Vacco's passion for Evergreen Park, where 5 he lived for 46 years, was worn proudly on his sleeve; he 6 stood up for his community and for municipalities and fought 7 many battles on behalf of local government in the Illinois 8 General Assembly; his appeal crossed party lines; and 9 WHEREAS, The passing of Anthony Vacco, Sr. will be deeply 10 felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his children, 11 Sandra (Gary Boston) Johnson, Darlene (David) Naumann, and 12 Anthony (Martha) Vacco, Jr.; his grandchildren, Deborah, 13 Scott, Lindsey, Brynn, Dana, and Stacey; his sister, Lee 14 (Joe) Garbarczyk; his sister-in-law, Carmella Vacco; his 15 nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and the residents of 16 Evergreen Park; he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, 17 Patricia Vacco and his brothers, Peter, Frank, and John 18 Vacco; therefore, be it 19 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 20 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 21 all who knew him, the death of Anthony Vacco, Sr. of 22 Evergreen Park, Illinois; and be it further 23 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 24 presented to the family of Anthony Vacco, Sr. with our 25 sincere condolences.
