92_SR0364 LRB9216467RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends 4 of Chicago Police Officer Donald J. Marquez, who tragically 5 died in the line of duty on March 19, 2002; and 6 WHEREAS, Donald J. Marquez, a 20-year veteran of the 7 Chicago Police Department, was the pride of the Back of the 8 Yards community and especially proud of his roots in his 9 tough South Side neighborhood; he was the third of six 10 children born to Daniel and Mary Marquez; among his many 11 friends while growing up was Matt Rodriguez, who became 12 superintendent of the Chicago Police Department; and 13 WHEREAS, After graduating from Kelly High School, Officer 14 Marquez worked as a sheet-metal worker, but after seeing 15 close friends die because of gang violence, he turned his 16 thoughts to becoming a police officer; and 17 WHEREAS, Donald Marquez joined the Chicago Police 18 Department in February, 1982; he worked as a tactical 19 officer, a gang crimes investigator, and a mass transit 20 officer before being assigned to the Chicago corporation 21 counsel's office several months ago; and 22 WHEREAS, During his career, Officer Marquez received 23 three department commendations and several honorable mentions 24 for his police work; and 25 WHEREAS, Officer Marquez was the family comedian who did 26 a side-splitting imitation of Marlon Brando from "The 27 Godfather"; when he entered a room, the whole place lit up; 28 and 29 WHEREAS, The passing of Officer Donald J. Marquez will be 30 deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his 31 wife, Maria; his children, Maria (Anthony) Trinidad, Carla, -2- LRB9216467RHrh 1 Alana, and Donald Jr.; his grandson, Anthony Santino 2 Trinidad; his parents, Daniel and Mary Marquez; his brothers, 3 Daniel (Ellen), David (Marianne), and Dean (Karen); his 4 sisters, Donna Isunza and Dee (Mark) Jobe; his nieces; his 5 nephews; his cousins and additional family; and his many 6 friends and colleagues at the Chicago Police Department; and 7 WHEREAS, Officer Marquez will be remembered as an honest, 8 hard-working cop who died a hero in his efforts to make the 9 City of Chicago a safer place for all; therefore, be it 10 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 11 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 12 all who knew him, the death of Chicago Police Office Donald 13 J. Marquez of Chicago, Illinois; and be it further 14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 15 presented to the family of Officer Donald J. Marquez with our 16 sincere condolences.
