92_SR0415 LRB9216776RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends 4 of Dr. Ronald M. "Ron" Shelton, who passed away on April 26, 5 2002; and 6 WHEREAS, Dr. Shelton was born on July 11, 1931, in 7 Shipman, Illinois to Russell Myron and Mildred Johnson 8 Shelton; he married Winifred "Winnie" Bell on July 12, 1953 9 in Seymour; he was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and 10 was deacon emeritus; he retired from Millikin University in 11 1994 after 34 years of teaching; and 12 WHEREAS, Dr. Shelton graduated from the University of 13 Illinois in 1953, earned his master's degree in 1957 and his 14 Ph.D. in 1965; he was asked to serve as acting chair of the 15 mathematics department for one year at Millikin University in 16 1962, and it was 18 years later before his successor was 17 named; and 18 WHEREAS, Dr. Shelton served on numerous committees, 19 self-study groups, and councils relating to faculty and 20 university affairs; in addition, he served actively as a 21 leader in several professional organizations including the 22 Illinois Section of the Mathematical Association of America, 23 of which he was chairman; he was chosen the Millikin 24 University Distinguished Faculty Lecturer in 1986, awarded 25 the Sears Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus 26 Leadership Award in 1991, received the Alpha Lamda Delta 27 Outstanding Teacher Award in 1992-1993, and was selected as a 28 Distinguished College or University Teacher of Mathematics by 29 the Illinois section of the Mathematical Association of 30 America; in 2001, the math and computer science lab at 31 Millikin University was named in his honor; and 32 WHEREAS, During Millikin's Centennial Celebration, Dr. -2- LRB9216776RHrh 1 Shelton was inducted into the Millikin Medallion Society, an 2 honorary society formed to recognize 200 people who have had 3 an extraordinary impact upon the university since its 4 founding in 1901; and 5 WHEREAS, The passing of Ronald Shelton will be deeply 6 felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, 7 Winnie; his daughters, Deborah B. (Forrest) Fisher, and 8 Kathleen A. (David) Sewell; his grandchildren, Stephanie 9 Fisher, Melody Fisher, and Bryan Sewell; and his sister, 10 Betty Shelton McGhee; therefore, be it 11 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 13 all who knew him, the death of Dr. Ronald Shelton of Decatur, 14 Illinois; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 16 presented to the family of Dr. Ronald Shelton with our 17 sincere condolences.
