92_SR0430 LRB9216839BHbh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Dean W. Lee of Brighton, who passed 4 away April 14, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Lee was the owner-operator of Curry Ice and 6 Coal and former owner of a farm-to-market milk-hauling 7 business; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Lee was born in White Hall on February 20, 9 1926, to Rollie and Lula Lee; he was the middle child of 10 three siblings; at the age of eight, Mr. Lee moved to 11 Brighton and graduated from Brighton High School in 1944; and 12 WHEREAS, After he graduated in 1944, Mr. Lee was drafted 13 by the U.S. Army and participated in the Americal Division in 14 the Pacific and during the American invasion at the 15 Philippine Islands during World War II; Mr. Lee also served 16 with the American occupational forces in Japan until 1946; he 17 attained the rank of sergeant; and 18 WHEREAS, Months after being discharged from the Army, Mr. 19 Lee met Dorothy Louis Keith of Alton through mutual friends; 20 they were married in 1947; and 21 WHEREAS, In 1947, Mr. Lee started working at Shell 22 Refinery in Wood River; he worked there for five years and 23 later bought a farm-to-market milk-hauling business, which he 24 operated for 25 years; he delivered milk to several St. Louis 25 area markets; and 26 WHEREAS, In 1975, he became owner-operator of Curry Ice 27 and Coal in Carlinville, a company that would haul coal from 28 mines, rocks from quarries, and sand from pits; he operated 29 the company for 15 years and retired in 1990; in 1988, 30 Mid-West Truckers awarded Mr. Lee the Class 3 Truck Driver 31 Award for achieving 5 million miles without a ticket or -2- LRB9216839BHbh 1 accident; and 2 WHEREAS, In retirement, Mr. Lee took computer classes at 3 Lewis and Clark College in Godfrey and became a home-based 4 computer operator, where he made business cards and address 5 labels for his wife's business and for his children; and 6 WHEREAS, Mr. Lee's children and grandchildren were the 7 most important things in his life, and adding to the joy were 8 his three great-grandchildren; he was a Boy Scout leader and 9 an Eight-year member of Salem Presbyterian Church, where he 10 served as elder and a clerk; Mr. Lee enjoyed woodworking and 11 gardening; and 12 WHEREAS, Mr. Lee will be deeply missed by all those who 13 knew him and loved him, especially his wife, Dorothy; his 14 son, Gary Lee; his two daughters, Barbara Hinkle and Carol 15 Brand; his brother, Donald Lee; his sister, Fern Edwards; his 16 five grandchildren; his two step grandchildren; his three 17 great-grandchildren; and his step great-grandchild; 18 therefore, be it 19 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 20 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 21 his family and friends, the passing of Dean W. Lee of 22 Brighton; and be it further 23 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 24 presented to the family of Dean W. Lee with our sincere 25 condolences.
