92_SR0477 LRB9217478BHbh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Gardner Heidrick of Hinsdale, who 4 passed away July 6, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Heidrick was born in Clarion, Pennsylvania, 6 the son of Emmett Heidrick, a professional baseball player; 7 Mr. Heidrick got a degree in business administration from the 8 University of Illinois, taking off a year halfway to earn 9 enough money to finish his education; he also held numerous 10 part-time jobs at college, ranging from garbage collecting to 11 waiting tables at a sorority; and 12 WHEREAS, Mr. Heidrick went to work as a salesman for the 13 Scott Paper Co. in Philadelphia, where he met English-born 14 Eileen Lindsay; they married and were together for 59 years, 15 until her death in 1996; and 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Heidrick moved to Kansas City as personnel 17 manager for the Consumers Cooperative, then to Chicago as a 18 management consultant for the firm of Booz Allen Hamilton; in 19 1953, he joined his friend John Struggles, and they started 20 their own executive-recruiting company; and 21 WHEREAS, Heidrick & Struggles grew to become the world's 22 second-largest executive search firm, with nearly 1,000 23 search professionals and more than 80 offices worldwide; and 24 WHEREAS, Mr. Heidrick was chief executive officer of the 25 company for many years, helping the firm shape the 26 executive-search industry; he co-founded the Association of 27 Executive Search Consultants, served as the trade group's 28 president and helped establish ethical standards for the 29 industry; and 30 WHEREAS, At the age of 70, he retired from Heidrick & 31 Struggles, but not from work altogether, instead co-founding -2- LRB9217478BHbh 1 the boutique executive search firm, the Heidrick Partners, 2 with his son, Bob Heidrick, who now is vice chairman of the 3 giant Spencer Stuart recruiting firm; and 4 WHEREAS, Mr. Heidrick was an avid golfer, traveling the 5 world to play top courses; he served as president of the 6 Hinsdale Golf Club and of the Community House, which provides 7 services to several suburbs in the Hinsdale area; an ardent 8 supporter of the University of Illinois, he served as 9 president of its alumni association and of the University of 10 Illinois Foundation, of which he was a life director; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Heidrick will be deeply missed by all those 12 who knew him and loved him, especially his sons, Bob and 13 Gardner Jr.; his six grandchildren; and his four 14 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it 15 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 17 his family and friends, the death of Gardner Heidrick; and be 18 it further 19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 20 presented to the family of Gardner Heidrick with our sincere 21 condolences.
