92_SR0479 LRB9217434BHbh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Paul Whelan of Belleville, who 4 passed away June 27, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Whelan was was born July 26, 1929, in 6 Shreveport, Louisiana; he graduated from St. John's Jesuit 7 High School in Shreveport in 1947; he received a bachelor of 8 arts degree in history from Holy Cross College in Worcester, 9 Massachusetts; he earned a master of arts degree in history 10 from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee and 11 a Ph.D. in history from St. Louis University in St. Louis, 12 Missouri; and 13 WHEREAS, Mr. Whelan joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and 14 was a pilot in combat air service in Korea and Vietnam, where 15 he received the Bronze Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, 16 and the Air Medal; he taught at the U.S. Air Force Academy as 17 professor of history, the Air Force Institute of Technology 18 as history department chairman, and at the Air War College; 19 and 20 WHEREAS, After his retirement from the U.S. Air Force as 21 a colonel in 1974, Mr. Whelan was dean of faculty at Spring 22 Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, for 3 years; he was 23 president of Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois; he was 24 president of Parks College of St. Louis University in 25 Cahokia, Illinois; and he was dean of national transportation 26 and dean of college business at Dowling College in Long 27 Island, New York, for two terms; Mr. Whelan served as a 28 commissioner for the Bi-State Development Agency and was 29 affiliated with the Illinois Department of Transportation - 30 Aviation Associates Inc. and the University Aviation 31 Accreditation Council; he also sat on the board of visitors 32 of the Community College of the Air Force and the board of -2- LRB9217434BHbh 1 directors of the Mid-American Behavioral Healthcare, Inc.; 2 and 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Whelan was a member of Our Lady Queen of 4 Peace Parish in Belleville, the Serra Club International, the 5 Rotary International, the Apostolate for Family Consecration 6 in Bloomingdale, Ohio, and the Boy Scouts of America, Okaw 7 Valley Council in Belleville; he was an Eagle Scout and a 8 recipient of the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope Award; and 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Whelan will be deeply missed by all those 10 who knew him and loved him, especially his wife, Patricia L. 11 Whelan, whom he married February 14, 1950, at St. John 12 Catholic Church in Shreveport, Louisiana; his 12 children, 13 Stephen (Patricia) Whelan, Timothy (Sylvia) Whelan, Michael 14 Whelan, Monica (Richard) O'Connor, Kevin (Cynthia) Whelan, 15 Thomas (Christine) Whelan, Patrick Whelan, Gregory (Sandra) 16 Whelan, Martin (Susan) Whelan, Matthew Whelan, Daniel (Laura) 17 Whelan, and Moira Whelan; his 37 grandchildren, Brian Paul, 18 Alison, Catherine, Ryan, Christopher, Paul Michael, Kathleen, 19 Donan, Brendan, Teresa, Luke, Connor, Elizabeth, John Paul, 20 Jonathan, Elizabeth, Emily, Margaret, David, Alexander, 21 Cullen, Sally, Jackson Paul, Jared Michael, Daniel, Jacob, 22 Caitlin, Sean, Ian Paul, Catherine, Nicholas, Mary Margaret, 23 and Jane Whelan, and Maureen, Roderick, Brian, and Nicole 24 O'Connor; and three sisters, Margaret Mary Whelan, Sarah 25 Whelan Blake, and Alice (Richard) Whelan Donohue; he was 26 preceded in death by his parents, Augustin Paul and Margaret 27 Whelan; therefore, be it 28 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 29 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 30 his family and friends, the death of Paul A. Whelan; and be 31 it further 32 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be -3- LRB9217434BHbh 1 presented to the family of Paul A. Whelan with our sincere 2 condolences.
