92_SR0484 LRB9217480RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincerest condolences to the family and friends 4 of William B. "Bill" Cannon of Decatur, who passed away on 5 July 4, 2002; and 6 WHEREAS, William B. Cannon was born on April 28, 1928 in 7 Decatur to Harry E. and Frances Chenoweth Cannon; he was the 8 husband of fellow Millikin alum, Virginia Herron Cannon; and 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Cannon attended Decatur schools, the 10 University of Illinois, and Millikin University; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Cannon was a United States Army veteran of 12 the Korean War, serving with the 44th Engineers and 13 completing his duty as captain; he participated in the early 14 atomic bomb tests in Yucca Flats, Nevada; and 15 WHEREAS, Mr. Cannon was a member of St. John's Episcopal 16 Church and a 50-year member of the Country Club of Decatur; 17 and 18 WHEREAS, Mr. Cannon began his banking career with 19 Security Savings and Loan, owned a controlling interest in 20 the Strasburg State Bank, the American Bank of Cerro Gordo, 21 the Bank of Findlay, and Schuyler Bank of Rushville and was 22 the chief organizer of Hickory Point Bank of Decatur; and 23 WHEREAS, Mr. Cannon received his MAI (Member of the 24 Appraisal Institute) in 1964; he was employed by Revolution 25 Trust Corp., where he was instrumental in dissolving five 26 savings and loan institutions during the savings and loan 27 crisis in the 1980s; and 28 WHEREAS, Mr. Cannon was an avid Republican, having served 29 as chairman for the entire downstate area during the first 30 Ronald Reagan campaign in 1976; he served as board member for -2- LRB9217480RHrh 1 the Salvation Army, the Chamber of Commerce, Decatur Economic 2 Development, the Oglesby Mansion, and St. John's Vestry; his 3 passion was the Decatur Park Board, of which he was a member 4 for 24 years; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Cannon was an instrument-rated pilot who 6 flew his own plane and was actively involved with the Decatur 7 Airport; he was also a proud member of the infamous Boy Scout 8 Troop 3, where he was an Eagle Scout; and 9 WHEREAS, The passing of William B. Cannon will be deeply 10 felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife of 50 11 years, Virginia; his children, Bruce (wife, Kathi) Cannon, 12 Anne (husband, Chuck) Traxler, and Amy (husband, Doug) 13 Austin; his grandchildren, John, Jennifer, Ted, Brian, Bryce, 14 Andrew, Katie, and Will; his sister, Nancy (husband, Bob) 15 Wilson; and his close relatives, Elaine and Lance Beery and 16 Donna Rogers; therefore, be it 17 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 18 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 19 all who knew him, the death of William B. Cannon of Decatur; 20 and be it further 21 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 22 presented to the family of William B. Cannon with our sincere 23 condolences.
