92_SR0501 LRB9217766RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincerest condolences to the family and friends 4 of Henry Slane, who passed away on August 24, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Henry Pindell Slane was the former chairman of 6 the board and chief executive officer of the Peoria Journal 7 Star; and 8 WHEREAS, Henry Slane was born on December 29, 1920 in 9 Peoria to Carl Powell and Frances Adelia Pindell Slane; he 10 was the husband of Dorothy Jean Childs; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Slane was a veteran of the United States 12 Navy; and 13 WHEREAS, The newspaper was founded in 1889 by his 14 maternal grandfather, Henry M. Pindell; after many mergers 15 over the years, the Journal Star was formed in 1954, with his 16 father as publisher; and 17 WHEREAS, Mr. Slane graduated from Yale University and 18 formerly was president of Illinois Valley Communications 19 Inc.; he originated the Employee Stock Ownership Plan at the 20 Journal Star in 1983 and was also a member of the American 21 Society of Newspaper Editors; and 22 WHEREAS, Mr. Slane was appointed a trustee of the Lincoln 23 Academy of Illinois in 1970, which honored Illinois citizens 24 for outstanding contributions toward the social progress of 25 mankind; he served as honorary chairman of the Walk for 26 Mankind in 1971; and 27 WHEREAS, Mr. Slane served on the board of directors of 28 Ozark Airlines, First Federal Savings and Loan Association, 29 First National Bank of Peoria, the Peoria Development Corp., 30 the Carver Community Center, and served on the advisory board -2- LRB9217766RHrh 1 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center; he also served on the 2 first board of directors of UPGRADE; and 3 WHEREAS, In 1968, Mr. Slane was named by Governor Otto 4 Kerner to serve on the statewide Illinoisans for Pure Air and 5 Water Committee; in 1985, he received the Mento Award for 6 community involvement and, in 1991, he was presented the A.S. 7 Oakford Award for community service by the Neighborhood House 8 Association; and 9 WHEREAS, The passing of Henry Pindell Sloan will be 10 deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his 11 sons, John Pindell Slane and Henry Pindell (wife, Roxan) 12 Slane, Jr.; his daughters, Elizabeth Jean (husband, Edward) 13 Stealy and Barbara (husband, Brad) Childs; his seven 14 grandchildren; and his two great-grandchildren; therefore, be 15 it 16 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 17 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 18 all who knew him, the death of Henry Pindell Slane of Peoria; 19 and be it further 20 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 21 presented to the family of Henry Pindell Slane with our 22 sincere condolences.
