 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members  of  the  Senate  of  the  State  of
 3    Illinois  were  deeply  saddened  to  learn  of  the death of
 4    Patrick L. O'Malley Sr. of Chicago on November  28,  2002  at
 5    the age of 91; and

 6        WHEREAS,  Mr.  O'Malley  was  a  leading public figure in
 7    Chicago for more than 40 years;

 8        WHEREAS, He worked his way up from  a  deliveryman  on  a
 9    Coca-Cola   truck   to   Vice   President  of  the  Coca-Cola
10    Corporation;  in  1962,  he  was  named  President   of   the
11    Chicago-based Canteen Corporation; over the next two decades,
12    he  oversaw  the  company's growth and retained a role in its
13    operation until his death, serving as Chairman Emeritus; and

14        WHEREAS, He  was  past  President  of  the  Chicago  Park
15    District,  and  past  President  of  the  Chicago  Home  Rule
16    Commission; and

17        WHEREAS,  His many civic accomplishments included helping
18    to develop the Petrillo Music  Shell,  reintroducing  mounted
19    police   to   city   parks,   and   orchestrating   the  1980
20    rehabilitation of Soldier Field that kept the Bears downtown;
21    he also arranged a last-minute investment  of  cash  in  1975
22    that kept the White Sox in Chicago; and

23        WHEREAS, He was past President of the National Restaurant
24    Association;  past  President  of the Rotary Club of Chicago;
25    past President of the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago;  past
26    President  and  former Chairman of the Chicago Convention and
27    Tourism Bureau; member of the Knights of Malta; and  director
28    of the 100 Club of Cook County; and

29        WHEREAS,   He   received  many  awards,  including  B'nai
30    B'rith's first ever Great American Award  in  1970,  and  the
31    Horatio Alger Award in 1972; and

 1        WHEREAS,  After  his  retirement, he and his wife, Helen,
 2    who died in February after 68 years of marriage, remained  in
 3    Chicago; and

 4        WHEREAS,  He  worked  in  a bi-partisan fashion and was a
 5    friend to all who knew him; he leaves a legacy  of  community
 6    involvement  and  civic  concern  that  will long inspire the
 7    citizens of this State; his every endeavor was  characterized
 8    by his commitment to excellence; and

 9        WHEREAS,  He  will be deeply missed by all his family and
10    friends, especially his son,  Patrick  L.  Jr.  (Bette);  his
11    grandchildren, Christyne (James) Dzwierzynski, Patrick L. III
12    (Melinda),  Brian (Emily), Michael, Cathleen (Eric) Lower and
13    Sean; and his great-grandchildren, Bailey and Patrick IV  and
14    Alex and Emma Dzwierzynski and Brenna; therefore, be it

15        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
16    ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
17    Patrick L. O'Malley Sr., along with all who  knew  and  loved
18    him,  and  extend  our  sincere condolences to his family and
19    friends; and be it further

20        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
21    presented  to  the  family  of  Patrick L. O'Malley Sr. as an
22    expression of our sympathy.
