92_SR0567 LRB9218430HShs 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of 3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Maewood Sims 4 Thornton on October 10, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mrs. Thornton was born September 3, 1925 in 6 Enondale, Mississippi to Albert and Mary Jane Sims; her 7 parents, four brothers, Munson, Albert, Johnny (Jack), and 8 Edward, three sisters, Katie Mae, Ethel, and Margaret, two 9 husbands, Johnnie Stennis and Herbert Smith, a son, Herbert 10 Smith II and a grandson, Demico Jermaine Smith, all preceded 11 her in death; and 12 WHEREAS, Mrs. Thornton attended school in Meridian 13 Mississippi; in 1942, she moved to East St. Louis; she was a 14 member of Pilgrim Green Missionary Baptist Church, and later 15 Mt. Paran and Christ United Missionary Baptist Church; she 16 served as a mother of the church; and 17 WHEREAS, Mrs. Thornton's passing has been deeply felt by 18 many, including her husband, James Thornton; four children, 19 Delores Smyles, Ernest (Joan) Smith, Dorothy (Emanuel) 20 Bishop, and Gary (Cheri) Smith; her special niece, Bernice 21 Nicholson Long; a sister, Savannah (Willie) McNeil; a 22 brother, Dewitt Sims; 21 grandchildren; and a host of 23 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives; 24 therefore, be it 25 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 26 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing 27 of Maewood Sims Thornton and offer our sincere condolences to 28 her family and friends; and be it further 29 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 30 presented to the family of Maewood Sims Thornton with our 31 deepest sympathy.
