 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members  of  the  Senate  of  the  State  of
 3    Illinois  were  saddened  to  learn  of  the death of Stephen
 4    Szymski of Westmont on November 30, 2002 at 87 years of  age;
 5    and

 6        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Szymski was born and raised in Chicago and
 7    attended Crane High School; and

 8        WHEREAS,  In  1945,  Mr.  Szymski,  who  was  a   Chicago
 9    firefighter,  moved  his  family to Westmont on the advice of
10    his wife, Anne; there he opened a baby clothes shop which  he
11    expanded and renamed Stephen's Department Store; and

12        WHEREAS,  He  also  opened O.K. Hardware, Stephen's Annex
13    Domestics, and Family Shoe Store; at one time he  owned  more
14    than  twenty  buildings  in  the  Village of Westmont; he was
15    known as a progressive thinker who  helped  Westmont  develop
16    and move forward; and

17        WHEREAS,  He  was  involved  in the community, bringing a
18    PolkaFest  to  the  village,  chairing  the  40th  and   50th
19    anniversary celebrations and serving as one of the first Fire
20    and Police Commissioners in the 1950s; he was a member of the
21    Elks,  Moose  and Lions Clubs and was a longtime supporter of
22    the Westmont Chamber of Commerce; and

23        WHEREAS, The passing of this outstanding citizen will  be
24    deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, including his wife
25    of  62  years,  Anne;  his sons, Gregory and Stephen; and his
26    five grandchildren; therefore, be it

27        RESOLVED, BY THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-SECOND  GENERAL
28    ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
29    Stephen Szymski and extend our sincere condolences to all his
30    family and friends; and be it further

 1        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
 2    delivered to the family of Stephen Szymski.
