 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members  of  the  Senate  of  the  State  of
 3    Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of James P. Kane
 4    Jr. on October 19, 2002; and

 5        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Kane was born August 25, 1943; he attended
 6    Visitation Grade School, 14th Ward in Chicago  and  graduated
 7    from  Leo  High  School  in  1962;  he  graduated from Loyola
 8    University in 1966 and John Marshall Law School in 1972; and

 9        WHEREAS, Mr. Kane taught and coached football  at  De  La
10    Salle  High  School  for seven years from 1966 to 1973, while
11    attending law school; he was much beloved by both players and
12    students who  once  chipped  in  and  gave  him  a  watch  in
13    appreciation  of his efforts; the watch was one of his prized
14    possessions for the  rest  of  his  life;  in  1998,  he  was
15    inducted into the De La Salle Sports Hall of Fame; and

16        WHEREAS,  Mr. Kane's law practice emphasized real estate,
17    of which he was one of the foremost experts in the  State  of
18    Illinois;  for  many years, he taught the most popular course
19    in the Chicago area for people  seeking  to  become  licensed
20    real  estate brokers; he also taught a renewal course and one
21    on real estate broker law; and

22        WHEREAS,  For  sixteen  years,  he  volunteered  as   the
23    basketball  coach  at  St.  Clement  Catholic Grade School in
24    Chicago's Lincoln Park  area;  he  started  the  seventh  and
25    eighth   grade  teams  beginning  with  few  players  and  no
26    equipment or uniforms; he provided the teams with  balls  and
27    raised  the  money  to purchase the first uniforms; under his
28    guidance, the program grew to several grade level teams  with
29    the  varsity  team  participating  in two leagues, playing 50
30    games a year; and

31        WHEREAS, Mr. Kane taught tolerance and diversity  through

 1    basketball   and   emphasized  gentlemanly  behavior  to  his
 2    students; he coached his teams to more  than  1,000  wins  as
 3    well  as  ten  league  or  tournament  championships;  he was
 4    elected to the Hall of Fame  of  the  West  Central  Athletic
 5    Association  in Chicago; in 2000, he was named Illinois Grade
 6    School Coach of the Year by the Illinois High School Athletic
 7    Association; and

 8        WHEREAS, The passing of Mr. Kane has been deeply felt  by
 9    all  who  knew  him,  especially  his wife, Denise; his sons,
10    Nicholas and Devlin; his  daughter,  Marilyn  Marturano;  his
11    grandchildren,  Regina and Daniel Marturano; and his sisters,
12    Louise Ward and Kathy Dwyer; he was preceded in death by  his
13    son, Ethan; therefore, be it

14        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
15    ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the  passing
16    of  James  P.  Kane Jr. and offer our deepest sympathy to his
17    family and friends; and be it further

18        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
19    presented to the family of James P. Kane Jr. with our sincere
20    condolences.
