Senate Sponsors: BURZYNSKI Short description: SCH CD-SCHOOL TERM LENGTH Synopsis of Bill as introduced: Amends the School Code. Increases both the minimum length of the school term and the minimum number of days of actual pupil attendance by one day each school year beginning with the 2002-2003 school year through the 2011-2012 school year. Effective immediately. HOUSE AMENDMENT NO. 1. Provides that if a school board, on the effective date of the amendatory Act, is acting under a collective bargaining agreement with its exclusive bargaining representative, then the increase in the minimum term and minimum number of days of actual pupil attendance does not begin until the school year after the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement. Provides that a school board is not required to increase the minimum term and minimum number of days of actual pupil attendance unless the school district receives an increase in State aid in an amount at least equal to the cost to be incurred by the school district to increase the minimum term and minimum number of days of actual pupil attendance. HOUSE AMENDMENT NO. 2. In the provision prohibiting the increase from beginning until the school year after the expiration of a collective bargaining agreement, allows the school board and exclusive bargaining representative to agree otherwise and provides that at the time that the increase begins, the school board shall prepare a calendar providing the minimum term to ensure the minimum number of days of actual pupil attendance.
