Senate Sponsors: SIEBEN Short description: VOL FIREFIGHTER LEAVE ABSENCE Synopsis of Bill as introduced: Creates the Volunteer Firefighter Leave of Absence Act. Provides that an employee who is a volunteer firefighter, and works for an employer employing 50 or more employees, shall be permitted to take temporary leaves of absence, not to exceed an aggregate of 14 days per calendar year, for fire or law enforcement training. Provides for enforcement of the Act in a proceeding before the Director of Labor in the case of an employee who is discharged, threatened with discharge, demoted, suspended, or discriminated against because the employee has taken time off to engage in fire or law enforcement training. Provides that the Director of Labor shall adopt rules implementing the Act. HOUSE AMENDMENT NO. 1. Provides that the leave requirement does not apply to a school district employee who had the opportunity to train when school is not in session but chose to train when school is in session. SENATE AMENDMENT NO. 1. Provides that an employee may not take a leave of absence for fire or law enforcement training unless the employee has exhausted all of his or her accrued vacation leave, personal leave, compensatory leave, and other leave (except sick leave and disability leave). Provides that an employer shall determine whether a leave of absence is a paid leave of absence or an unpaid leave of absence.
