Short description: 
INS SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS                                                 

Synopsis of Bill as introduced:
        Amends  the  Illinois  Insurance  Code.   Requires  coverage  for      
   serious mental  illnesses  to  be  provided  on  the  same  terms  and      
   conditions   as  are  applicable  to  other  illnesses  and  diseases.      
   Requires group health benefit plans to provide coverage for 45 days of      
   inpatient treatment and 60 visits for outpatient treatment for  mental      
   illness.   Provides  that  the changes made by this amendatory Act are      
   inoperative  after  December  31,  2005.   Amends  the  Department  of      
   Insurance Law to require the Department to perform a study  of  mental      
   health coverage.  Effective January 1, 2002.                                
        SENATE AMENDMENT NO. 1.                                                
        Limits the scope of the bill to coverage under group policies  of      
   accident and health insurance.                                              
        SENATE AMENDMENT NO. 2.                                                
        Provides that the coverage shall  include  35,  rather  than  60,      
   visits for outpatient treatment each year.
