House Sponsors: WAIT-LAWFER-HASSERT-RIGHTER Short description: MUNI CD-NUMBER OF ALDERMEN Synopsis of Bill as introduced: Amends the Illinois Municipal Code. Provides that a municipality with 20,000 or more inhabitants may adopt, by ordinance or resolution, at least 180 days prior to the first municipal election following the municipality's receipt of the new federal decennial census results, the following number of aldermen: in cities exceeding 20,000 by not exceeding 50,000, 10 aldermen; exceeding 50,000 but not exceeding 70,000, 14 aldermen; exceeding 70,000 but not exceeding 90,000, 16 aldermen; and exceeding 90,000 but not exceeding 500,000, 18 aldermen. Provides that a municipality with at least 40,000 inhabitants but not more than 50,000 inhabitants may adopt, by either ordinance or resolution, at least 180 days prior to the first municipal election following the municipality's receipt of the new federal decennial census results, 16 aldermen. Effective immediately. SENATE AMENDMENT NO. 1. Adds reference to: 65 ILCS 5/3.1-20-20 from Ch. 24, par. 3.1-20-20 Provides procedures by which a municipality, after having restricted the number of aldermen, may reinstate the number of aldermen to the maximum number allowed by the Illinois Municipal Code. HOUSE AMENDMENT NO. 1. Adds reference to: 65 ILCS 5/3.1-55-25 new Provides that if a municipality adopts a different form of government, then its current form of municipal government is automatically abandoned when the new form of municipal government takes effect. HOUSE AMENDMENT NO. 2. Provides that a municipality with 15,000 but not exceeding 20,000 inhabitants may, by ordinance or resolution, at least 180 days prior to the first municipal election following the municipality's receipt of the new federal decennial census results, adopt 8 aldermen.
