AN ACT concerning postpartum depression.
Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
represented in the General Assembly:
Section 5. The Department of Human Services Act is
amended by adding Section 10-7 as follows:
(20 ILCS 1305/10-7 new)
Sec. 10-7. Postpartum depression.
(a) The Department shall develop and distribute a
brochure or other information about the signs, symptoms,
screening or detection techniques, and care for postpartum
depression, including but not limited to methods for patients
and family members to better understand the nature and causes
of postpartum depression in order to lower the likelihood
that new mothers will continue to suffer from this illness.
This brochure shall be developed in conjunction with the
Illinois State Medical Society, the Illinois Society for
Advanced Practice Nursing, and any other appropriate
statewide organization of licensed professionals.
(b) The brochure required under subsection (a) of this
Section shall be distributed, at a minimum, to physicians
licensed to practice medicine in all its branches, certified
nurse midwives, and other health care professionals who
provide care to pregnant women in the hospital, office, or
clinic.
(c) The Secretary may contract with a statewide
organization of physicians licensed to practice medicine in
all its branches for the purposes of this Section.
