SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Dana Richard Hales, who passed away on
4August 6, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dana Hales was born to Marshall Palmer Hales and
6Helen (Wilson) Hales in Champaign on March 7, 1950; he
7graduated from Newman High School in 1968; he received his
8associate's degree and a certificate in mechanical drafting
9from Parkland College on June 16, 1970; he married Cathy Carr
10at the First Christian Church of Newman on August 15, 1970; he
11attended Eastern Illinois University, where he earned a
12Bachelor of Science in Education with a concentration in
13Industrial Arts on March 2, 1973 and his Master of Educational
14Administration on August 10, 1989; he served in the Illinois
15National Guard for 23 years, retiring as a major; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Dana Hales taught industrial arts, drafting,
17woodworking, metalwork, and welding at Homer High School,
18Newman High School, and Paris High School; he served as
19principal of Newman High School and Catlin High School; he was
20also editor-in-chief of The Newman Independent for many years;
21and
 
22    WHEREAS, Dana Hales was a lifelong member of the First

1Christian Church of Newman; he ran the longest running
2adjutant of the Newman American Legion Post and rarely missed
3a meeting; he was a founding member of the Sons of Union
4Veterans, Douglas County Chapter; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dana Hales loved history, especially anything
6related to the military; his specialty was the Civil War and
7World War II; he collected different pieces of military
8memorabilia from different wars, including bayonets, guns, and
9various other artifacts; he and other local collectors enjoyed
10attending different trade shows together to find pieces to add
11to their respective collections; he loved speaking about
12history and conducted yearly presentations at Shiloh High
13School; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dana Hales is survived by his wife; his sons,
15Wade (Amy) Hales and Matt (Danielle Kusman) Hales; his sister,
16Karen Riddell; his grandchildren, Austin (Katie Queen) Hales,
17Howard Hales, Hayden Hales, and Kenzie Hales; and his
18great-granddaughter, Randy Lynn; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Dana Richard Hales and extend our sincere condolences to his
22family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it

2presented to the family of Dana Hales as an expression of our
3deepest sympathy.
