SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Joseph Nelson Cook Sr. of Channahon, who passed away on January 18, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Cook Sr. was born on March 7, 1931, in Buckingham; his parents were William J. and Dorothy J. Cook; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Cook Sr. was a lifelong resident of Channahon and a graduate of the last class of Channahon High School; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Cook Sr. was a proud American and served his country with distinction as a member of the United States Army 1st Cavalry Division during the Korean War; during his service, he was listed as missing in action for over 121 days behind enemy lines and was one of the few men to return home from Task Force Crombez; he was the recipient of the Silver Star, five Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts for his meritorious service; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Cook Sr. was a proud member of the Will County Carpenters Union Local #174 and retired after many years of service; he was also a former Park Ranger and a caretaker of the McKinley Woods Forest Preserve; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Cook Sr. was a devoted Cubs fan; he enjoyed fishing and hunting with his son, gardening, and carving duck decoys; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Cook Sr. was a lifetime member of the DAV and the Grundy County Rod and Gun Club; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Cook Sr. was preceded in death by his grandson, Benjamin Nephi Cook-Klossing; his parents; his beloved brother, Wesley D. Cook; and his lifelong best friend, Robert "Chiv" Chiovatero; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Cook Sr. is survived by his dearly loved wife of 48 years, Mary Alice Cook; his son and namesake, Channahon Mayor Joseph N. Cook, Jr. (Laurie Pillion); his devoted daughter, Gloria L. (Scott) Cook-Richardson; his special son, James Tyler Cook; his grandson, Alexander J. Cook-Klossing; his granddaughter, Jessica M. Cook-Klossing; his siblings, Bill (Dorothy) Cook, Robert (Gladys) Cook, and Beverly Keast; and his many nieces, nephews, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Joseph Nelson Cook Sr.; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Joseph Cook Sr. as an expression of our sympathy.
