HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Superman's origin is one of the best-known stories in comic book history; and

WHEREAS, Superman's date of birth has been a matter of debate over his career as a crime fighter; and

WHEREAS, February 29 was ordained as Clark Kent's birthday in a 1976 edition of DC Comics' Super Calendar", which also listed a number of historic occasions and established birthdays for numerous other characters, including Lois Lane; and

WHEREAS, DC Comics' initial reasoning for establishing Superman's birthday on leap day was because the day only appears every four years, which could explain why Superman is still "young" after appearing in comics for generations; and

WHEREAS, Superman's ties to Illinois include the town of Metropolis in Southern Illinois, which was proclaimed as the "Hometown of Superman" by the Illinois House of Representatives on June 9, 1972; and

WHEREAS, Superman's date of birth has bounced from date to date, but only one date, February 29, has been officially celebrated by DC Comics in recent years; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare February 29, 2024 as "Superman Day" in the State of Illinois.
