SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Thomas W. "Tom" Ortciger, who passed
4away on December 7, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Tom Ortciger was born to Edward and Mildred
6(Jirkovsky) Ortciger in Chicago on February 14, 1941; he
7graduated from J. Sterling Morton High School in Cicero; he
8attended Northwestern University and graduated from Shimer
9College in 1964; he married Nancy Cruthis; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Tom Ortciger had a long and distinguished career
11in public service; he was an executive assistant to
12Congressman Edward Derwinski and worked for the
13administrations of Governor James Thompson, Governor Jim
14Edgar, and Governor George Ryan; he served as assistant
15director of the Illinois Department of Registration and
16Education and then as deputy state fire marshal; he was
17appointed director of the Illinois Emergency Services &
18Disasters Agency in 1988; due to his superb skills in handling
19critical issues, he was then appointed director of the
20Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Tom Ortciger served as alderperson for the
22Village of Leland Grove for many years until 2005; and

1    WHEREAS, Tom Ortciger was initiated into the Westchester
2#0995 Masonic Lodge in 1965, where he remained a member until
3he became affiliated with the Temperance #0016 Lodge in
4Vandalia in 2008; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Tom enjoyed traveling, hunting, spending time
6outdoors, and discussing politics; he was an incredible chef
7who cooked legendary seven-course Christmas dinners for family
8and friends; he will be remembered for his larger-than-life
9personality and his sarcastic, sharp wit; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Tom Ortciger is survived by his wife of 30 years,
11Nancy Ortciger; his son, Edward (Lisa) Ortciger; his
12stepchildren, Margie (Dave) Chilovich and Chip (Lynn)
13Fritzsche; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two
14cousins; and many friends; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Thomas W. "Tom" Ortciger and extend our sincere condolences to
18his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Tom Ortciger as an expression of our
