SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3congratulate the Springfield Ceramics and Crafts Club (SCCC)
4on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and
 
5    WHEREAS, On May 21, 1924, SCCC was founded as the
6Springfield Ceramic Society by Springfield resident and
7initial president Mrs. Lewis Minor, who regularly hosted
8fashionable teas in her home for women interested in ceramic
9arts, especially hand-painting china; in 1928, the
10organization's name was changed to its current designation to
11reflect that its members' creative pursuits had grown into
12involving all arts and crafts; and
 
13    WHEREAS, During its early years, SCCC members would place
14their created craft items on display and meet with talented
15and influential citizens from the Greater Springfield Area,
16including fellow member Elizabeth Conner Lindsay, the wife of
17poet Vachel Lindsay; the club's first exhibit was held at the
18Lincoln Library for public viewing, and this practice of
19exhibiting items created by members still exists today at the
20annual Spring Table Setting Luncheon and Fall Holiday Market;
21and
 
22    WHEREAS, SCCC initiated its first table setting display in

11930, and the club later won first place at the 7th Annual
2Table Setting Tournament hosted by the Stix, Baer & Fuller
3store in St. Louis, Missouri in 1938, with the distinction of
4being the only club outside of the City of St. Louis invited to
5participate; the organization continues this tradition each
6spring at its annual Table Setting Luncheon, where new members
7display their table designs; and
 
8    WHEREAS, SCCC's current objective is the pursuit of
9teaching ceramics and crafts in their various phases and,
10through offering such instruction, to become involved in
11charitable projects and programs that benefit the community in
12order to enhance educational and community services while
13simultaneously supporting a better understanding of art in the
14Greater Springfield Area; the organization's fundraising
15efforts have allowed continued funding of its community
16activities during its 100-year history; and
 
17    WHEREAS, SCCC members have reached hundreds of community
18members by donating their skills and talents to teach classes
19and provide funds to purchase art supplies; the club currently
20partners with Springfield area schools, the Sojourn Women's
21Center, the Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery, MERCY Communities,
22and Springfield Memorial and HSHS St. John's Hospitals; the
23organization has also donated thousands of dollars through its
24Youth Art Outreach Grant to aid art teachers working at

1Springfield area schools; and
 
2    WHEREAS, SCCC membership, which consists of individuals
3who primarily reside in Springfield and the Greater
4Springfield Area, has grown from its humble beginnings of 12
5members in 1924 to 206 members today; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the
8Springfield Ceramics and Crafts Club (SCCC) on its 100th
9anniversary, and we recognize its members for their dedication
10to the arts and the community; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to SCCC as an expression of our esteem and respect.
