SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Johnny Ray "John" Shallenberger of
4Creve Coeur, who passed away on January 22, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Shallenberger was born in Peoria to Vernie
6Ray and Doris Agnes (Akridge) Shallenberger on July 20, 1954;
7he married Debbie Relker in Sunnyland on June 9, 1973; and
 
8    WHEREAS, John Shallenberger retired from Caterpillar, Inc.
9on January 1, 2016 after 43 years of service; he then went to
10work for the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office as a bailiff at
11the courthouse on January 4, 2016; he held the position of
12chief bailiff since March 20, 2021; and
 
13    WHEREAS, John Shallenberger was a retired member of United
14Auto Workers Local 974 and was active in their leadership for
15many years, last serving as financial secretary; in addition,
16he was civic minded and had served as Groveland Township
17Supervisor, a Village of Creve Coeur Trustee, and a precinct
18committeeman; and
 
19    WHEREAS, John Shallenberger's family was a priority to
20him, and he loved watching his grandchildren participate in
21sports and their activities; he also enjoyed gardening and was

1known for raising jalapenos and making jalapeno jelly; he
2attended First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Creve
3Coeur; and
 
4    WHEREAS, John Shallenberger was preceded in death by his
5parents; his brother, Gary Lee Shallenberger; his sisters,
6Frankie J. Freeman and Melody E. Tackett; and his
7brothers-in-law, Johnny Martin, William Howard, and Michael
8Boeck; and
 
9    WHEREAS, John Shallenberger is survived by his wife,
10Debbie; his sons, John (Jennifer) and Jason Shallenberger; his
11grandchildren, Carter, Mia, and Grayson Shallenberger; his
12sisters, Regina Martin and Ramona Howard; his sister-in-law,
13Julia Boeck; and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
16Johnny Ray "John" Shallenberger and extend our sincere
17condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
18him; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of John Shallenberger as an expression
21of our deepest sympathy.
