| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Jean Alice Augusta Carter-Hill of | 4 | | Chicago, who passed away on June 24, 2016; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Jean Carter-Hill was born in Memphis, Tennessee to | 6 | | Patrick Sr. and Annie Long Carter on July 5, 1937; she attended | 7 | | Lake View Elementary School in Arkansas and Woodstock High | 8 | | School in Memphis, where she was a star basketball player; she | 9 | | studied child development, public speaking, and business | 10 | | mathematics at Kenney-King College in Chicago; she married | 11 | | Robert Johnson in 1957 and they settled in Chicago in 1962; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Jean Carter-Hill worked for the Chicago Public | 13 | | School District for 25 years; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Jean Carter-Hill married Henry Hill in 1978; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, Jean Carter-Hill encouraged the youth of her | 16 | | community to be involved in making their neighborhoods a better | 17 | | place to live; in 1996, with her help, they persuaded the city | 18 | | to tear down an abandoned hospital building near the Nicholson | 19 | | School; a wooded area, also near the Nicholson School, became a | 20 | | campus park and garden and is now known as the Jean Carter-Hill | 21 | | Community Garden; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, In the summer of 1997, Jean Carter-Hill co-founded | 2 | | Imagine Englewood IF (IEI) and served as its executive | 3 | | director; IEI continues to operate with a focus on community | 4 | | health and to encourage youth to make positive decisions about | 5 | | their future; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Jean Carter-Hill joined with others to found the | 7 | | Englewood Community Cultural Planning Council, a group of | 8 | | residents, arts and cultural organizations, and other | 9 | | neighborhood organizations, that meets monthly to address | 10 | | community issues through the arts; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Jean Carter-Hill was preceded in death by her | 12 | | parents; her brothers, Emmett and Patrick Carter; her sister, | 13 | | Johnnie Naylor; and her stepdaughter, Cynthia Prichett; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Jean Carter-Hill is survived by her husband, | 15 | | Henry; her children, Gregory Carter, Sheryl (Jonathan) Lott, | 16 | | Robert Johnson Jr., Debra (Bernard) Coble, and Mark Johnson; | 17 | | her stepchildren, Henry Hill Jr., Michele Hill, and Fredrick | 18 | | Hill; her grandchildren, Latrice (Ignatius), LaShaundra, | 19 | | DeLisa (Charles), Raquel, Dericka, Derrick Jr., Raven, Dejuan, | 20 | | Marissa, Enya, Pierre, Amaris, Fredrick, Deangelo, and Trevor; | 21 | | six great-grandchildren; her sisters, Eloise (Cle) Gardner, | 22 | | and Ann Brewer; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, |

| 2 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | 3 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 4 | | Jean Alice Augusta Carter-Hill, and extend our sincere | 5 | | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved | 6 | | her; and be it further
| 7 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 8 | | presented to the family of Jean Carter-Hill as an expression of | 9 | | our deepest sympathy.
