SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Mattie Mae Stanberry, who passed away
4on April 13, 2022; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry was born to Theora Dumas Hicks
6Brown and Samuel Hicks in Barnesville, Georgia on April 22,
71923; she was raised by her maternal grandfather, Joe Dumas,
8and her step-grandmother, Mattie Phinizee Dumas; she completed
9her primary and secondary education in Barnesville; she
10married Charlie Russell in Barnesville, and he preceded her in
11death; they had one son, Anthony; she later moved to
12Cleveland, Ohio and then Chicago; she married Clarence
13McKinley Sr., and he preceded her in death; they had one son,
14Clarence Jr.; she married Stewart Stanberry in August 1968,
15and he preceded her in death in 1999; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry worked for SRA, a division of
17IBM; she retired after over 30 years of service in 1981; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry committed to her faith at an
19early age; she was an active member of South Congregational
20Church, which later merged with University Church, where she
21attended regularly for a combined total of over 60 years and
22often hosted the coffee hour; she was a founding member of the

1Hicks Family Reunion and an active member of the West Woodlawn
2Women's Community Club; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry loved traveling and spent each
4winter in Oceanside, California; she also enjoyed cooking and
5hosting cookouts, bid whist parties, and holiday dinners; she
6was an avid gardener and an excellent dancer; she loved being
7around her family and friends; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry was preceded in death by her
9sons, Anthony and Clarence Jr.; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Mattie Stanberry is survived by her
11daughters-in-law, Annie Russell and Carmella Giles-McKinley;
12her stepsons, Timothy (Tara) and Tre'Voir (Brittany); her
13special adopted friend, Gwendolyn Sanders; her special adopted
14grandchildren, Tony (Rachel) and Andrea; her University Church
15family; and a host of family and dear friends; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Mattie Mae Stanberry and extend our sincere condolences to her
19family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
20further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
