HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of Chapin as they celebrate the sesquicentennial of the village; and

WHEREAS, In September of 1848, Horace Chapin came from Massachusetts and settled in Morgan County; he wrote his brother, Lyman, back east and told him to move the family to Morgan County, and they arrived in November of 1848; they spent their first winter in Jacksonville, and in the spring bought the Seth Wetherbee farm; and

WHEREAS, The brothers were later joined by their mother and younger brothers; the brothers later decided to lay out a town near the Wabash railroad, and asked the superintendent of the Wabash line what they should name the community; and

WHEREAS, He promptly said "Chapin" and the little village was born; and

WHEREAS, The citizens of Chapin will celebrate the sesquicentennial of the village during Chapin Big Country Days in August of 2008; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the citizens of Chapin as they celebrate the sesquicentennial of the village and wish them the best in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to John Williams, Village Board President of the Village of Chapin, as a symbol of our respect.
