HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Lowell Melvin Zollar of Chicago, who passed away on June 13, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Lowell Zollar was born on February 12, 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri; his parents were Anderson and Carolyn Zollar; and

WHEREAS, He attended Du Sable High School in Chicago where he was head of the Rifle Club and was a lieutenant colonel in the ROTC; he earned his Bachelor's degree from Roosevelt University, his Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan, and his Doctorate of Medicine from Howard University College of Medicine; and

WHEREAS, Lowell Zollar joined the United States Air Force and later served as a recruiter in St. Louis; during this time he met and married Doris Lowe, his wife of 52 years; and

WHEREAS, Lowell Zollar served as the first director of the Virology Lab at the former Contagious Disease Hospital in Chicago; he conducted research in virology at the Hektoen Institute of Medical Research and later became a member of the Board of Directors; he was Board Certified in Pediatrics; he later served as Chief Resident of Cook County Hospital, where he performed his internship and residency; and

WHEREAS, He was a clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Illinois, Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Mercy Hospital and later at Jackson Park Hospital, and the founder of Children's Habilitation Center in Harvey; and

WHEREAS, Lowell Zollar was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi; he enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and friends; he collected African and African-American art; and he loved sunsets along the Inner Coastal Waterways of Hilton Head Island; and

WHEREAS, Lowell Zollar is survived by his loving wife, Doris; his two children, Nikki and Larry ("Lowell, Jr."); his grandchildren, William Lowell Von Hoene ("Von") and Branden Zollar; his son-in-law, William A. Von Hoene, Jr.; his sister, Pearl Rawls; his niece, Carol Miller; his great nieces, Erin and Alison Miller; and his many cousins, friends, supporters, and colleagues; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with all who knew and loved him, the passing of Lowell Zollar; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lowell Melvin Zollar as a symbol of our sympathy.
