SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Charles M. Smith of Benton, who passed away on October 6, 2011; and

WHEREAS, He was born December 13, 1925, in Benton to Edward and Nancy Marie (Wayman) Smith; he married Norma L. Bigham on February 14, 1947, in Pocahontas, Arkansas; and

WHEREAS, He served with the United States Army during World War II in India and Burma; after leaving the Army, he owned and operated Charles M. Smith Trucking, Tri-City Redi Mix Inc., and Benton Drug; he was also the president of First American Savings and Loan and mayor of Benton from 1987 to 1991; and

WHEREAS, He was of the Non-Denominational faith; and

WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his sons, Richard and Charles; and his brother, Everett; and

WHEREAS, Charles Smith is survived by his son, Robert Smith and wife, Pamela; his daughters, Suella Sullivan and Melony Dalby and husband, Robert; his grandchildren, Dean Smith, Shauna Smith Mullins and husband, Dale, Andrea Smith Butler and husband, Brian, and David Brown; his great-grandchildren, Katlyn and Faith Wyant, Peyton and Hannah Robinson, Allen Mullins, and Tyler and Chloe Butler; his sister, Florence Warner; his brothers, Arthur and wife, Patty and Carl and wife, Beverly; and several nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Charles Smith; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Charles Smith as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
