SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Gene Callahan of Springfield, who passed away on August 4, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Gene Callahan was a native of Milford; he was a graduate of Illinois College in Jacksonville and served in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, Gene Callahan began his career as a reporter and columnist for the Illinois State Register; after his time as a reporter, he worked for Democratic office holders, including Governors Sam Shapiro and Otto Kerner; he then worked as Chief of Staff to Lt. Governor Paul Simon; he worked for Alan Dixon for more than 19 years, including when Dixon was State Treasurer and Secretary of State; he was Dixon's Chief of Staff during his years as a Senator; following his time with Senator Dixon, he served as Director of Government Relations for Major League Baseball; he was considered a positive influence by both sides of the political isle; and

WHEREAS, Gene Callahan was preceded in death by his son, Dan Callahan; and

WHEREAS, Gene Callahan is survived by his wife, Ann, and by his daughters, United States Representative Cheri Bustos and Lynn Callahan Riddley; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Gene Callahan, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Gene Callahan as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
