SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Leon Mayer of Savoy, who passed away on July 14, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Leon Mayer was born in Millstadt on April 16, 1927 to Albert and Agnes (nee Schlemer) Mayer; after high school, he served in the United States Navy as a "Seabee" (Construction Battalion); he then attended Southern Illinois University and married Patricia Williamson; and

WHEREAS, Leon Mayer obtained his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois and ended his career there as an associate professor of vocational and technical education; he had a passion for international agricultural education; during the 1970s, he worked in administration and program development at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria as a representative of the United States Agency for International Development; he also taught at universities in Guam and Jamaica; and

WHEREAS, Leon Mayer was a devout Catholic and served the church in many ways over the years; he was also an avid gardener and an excellent "shade tree" mechanic and home improvement specialist; his favorite hobby was dancing the polka and he was a member of several polka clubs over the years; and

WHEREAS, Leon Mayer was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Patricia; and

WHEREAS, Leon Mayer is survived by his sons, John and his wife, Lezlie (Shoaf) Mayer, Mark and his wife, Margaret (Murphy) Mayer, Tom and his wife, Kathy (VanCamp) Mayer, Jim and his wife, Pat (Fonner) Mayer, and Joe and his wife, Joy (Mathis) Mayer; his 11 grandchildren; and his great-grandchild; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Leon Mayer, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Leon Mayer as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
