SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
110 ILCS 947/65.75 new

    Amends the Higher Education Student Assistance Act. For his or her first year of full-time attendance at an institution of higher learning, provides that a person is entitled to a $1,000 grant if he or she (i) is in the legal custody of his or her grandparent and receives public aid assistance under the Illinois Public Aid Code, (ii) has graduated from high school with a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and (iii) has been recommended for the grant by the principal of his or her high school.

1     AN ACT concerning education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Higher Education Student Assistance Act is
5 amended by adding Section 65.75 as follows:
 
6     (110 ILCS 947/65.75 new)
7     Sec. 65.75. Grants for children raised by grandparents. For
8 his or her first year of full-time attendance at an institution
9 of higher learning, a person is entitled to a $1,000 grant,
10 which must be used towards the payment of tuition and mandatory
11 fees, if he or she meets the following qualifications:
12         (1) The person is in the legal custody of his or her
13     grandparent and receives public aid assistance under the
14     Illinois Public Aid Code.
15         (2) The person has graduated from high school with a
16     cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0
17     scale or its equivalent.
18         (3) The person has been recommended for the grant by
19     the principal or other appropriate administrative officer
20     of his or her high school.
21     Grants awarded under this Section shall be administered by
22 and paid out of funds available to the Commission.
