SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

625 ILCS 5/3-611.5 new

Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides for the issuance of special license plates for vehicles owned by a fire department or fire protection district or by a chief officer of a fire department or fire protection district. Provides for the markings on these plates.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding Section 3-611.5 as follows:

(625 ILCS 5/3-611.5 new)

Sec. 3-611.5. Fire departments and fire chiefs.

(a) Upon receipt of a request from a municipality or fire protection district that operates a fire department, accompanied by the appropriate application and fee, the Secretary of State shall issue to the municipality or fire protection district plates as described in this Section. These plates shall be issued only for vehicles owned by the fire department or owned by a chief officer of the fire department if the chief officer is authorized by the corporate authorities of the municipality or fire protection district to use the vehicle as an emergency response vehicle.

(b) There shall appear, in addition to the designation of the State and the year for which the license plate was issued, the letters FD displayed vertically on the left side of the plate, followed by the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division number of the fire department and the radio signature number of the vehicle, followed in the next line by the words "Fire Department".
