| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Robert Theodore Carton of Rock Island, | 4 | | who passed away on November 11, 2017; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Bob Carton was born in Moline to Adiel and Augusta | 6 | | Carton on April 4, 1920; he graduated with honors from St. | 7 | | Ambrose College in 1942; he was a two-year captain of the | 8 | | basketball team and an All Conference Collegiate; he was later | 9 | | inducted into the St. Ambrose Basketball Hall of Fame; he was a | 10 | | World War II veteran and served in the European Theater at the | 11 | | Advanced Headquarters of the Ninth Air Force; he received the | 12 | | Bronze Star for meritorious service; he married Mary Evelyn | 13 | | Hagan, whom he met while serving in Germany; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Bob Carton began his career working with his | 15 | | mother at Carton's Grocery in Moline, the family business; he | 16 | | was later employed as Director of Employee Relations at the | 17 | | former Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company; he retired after | 18 | | 40 years of service; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Bob Carton, along with his wife, entered the | 20 | | Postulancy and Novitiate of the Third Order of St. Francis at | 21 | | Sacred Heart Church in Peoria and they were professed as | 22 | | Tertiaries in 1950; they were generous in support of Catholic |

| 2 | | WHEREAS, Bob Carton was active in his community and served | 3 | | on the Board of Directors for Catholic Social Services, for | 4 | | Skills Incorporated, for Project Now, and for the Rock Island | 5 | | Chamber of Commerce; he was also a past president and | 6 | | longstanding member of the Rock Island Optimist Club; he | 7 | | enjoyed attending sporting events in support of his children, | 8 | | grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; his love of a good game | 9 | | was only surpassed by his love for the kids; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Bob Carton was preceded in death by his parents; | 11 | | his wife, Mary; his son, Benedict; his sons-in-law, Jerry | 12 | | Kline, Bob Sproston, and Bob Walas; his grandchildren, Kyle | 13 | | Sproston and Helen Carton; his sisters, Hilda, Ann, and Sister | 14 | | Mary Antonia O.S.F.; and his brothers, Rt. Rev. Msgr. George A. | 15 | | Carton, John, and Joseph; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Bob Carton is survived by his sons, Anthony | 17 | | (Cynthia), Leo (Mary), and Gerry; and his daughters, Barbara | 18 | | McAtee, Rita Sproston, Mary (John) Pocivasek, Ann Walas, and | 19 | | Regina Kline; therefore, be it
