| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Military service members of Illinois and across | 3 | | the United States have sworn an oath to protect our nation's | 4 | | freedoms, even if it means the cost of their own life; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, These patriots join as young as seventeen years of | 6 | | age and are entrusted with the lives of their battle buddies, | 7 | | wingmen, and shipmates, along with various security clearances | 8 | | which entrust them with classified information; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, We already give our service members waivers based | 10 | | on their age for such things as renting a car and checking into | 11 | | a hotel; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, If they are old enough to die for our country or | 13 | | be tried in court as an adult and if they are wise and | 14 | | responsible enough to handle classified information that could | 15 | | put our nation at risk, serve on a jury, and shape our | 16 | | elections' outcomes, then they should be old enough to make | 17 | | well-informed decisions regarding their own personal health | 18 | | and safety; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Withholding their ability to purchase tobacco or | 20 | | alcohol or obtain a conceal carry license takes away the | 21 | | privileges of adulthood for those already acting with the full |

| 1 | | responsibility and culpability of a legal adult; and
| 2 | | WHEREAS, By not entrusting them with the full rights and | 3 | | privileges of adulthood, we are dishonoring the freedoms and | 4 | | liberties that they have voluntarily sworn to protect, | 5 | | disrespecting the sacrifices that they make, and disregarding | 6 | | the responsible, wise, and heroic grown men and women that they | 7 | | have become; therefore, be it
| 8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 9 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 10 | | we state our belief that the State of Illinois should grant | 11 | | those currently serving on Active, Guard, and Reserve status | 12 | | with the rights and privileges of adulthood; and be it further
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 14 | | delivered to all Illinois constitutional officers, the Speaker | 15 | | and Minority Leader of the Illinois House of Representatives, | 16 | | and the President and Minority Leader of the Illinois Senate.
