AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 4548

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 4548 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
527-23.17 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/27-23.17 new)
7    Sec. 27-23.17. Native American unit of instruction.
8    (a) To achieve the goal of studying Native American
9culture and history in order to inspire students to respect
10the dignity of all races and peoples and to forever abandon
11discrimination, beginning with the 2023-2024 school year,
12every public elementary school and high school shall include
13in its curriculum a unit of instruction studying the Native
14American experience, including the history of Native Americans
15in this State and the Midwest. This unit of instruction shall
16include individual Native American contributions made in the

1fields of government, art, humanities, and science, as well as
2the contributions of Native American communities to the
3economic, cultural, social, and political development of our
4country and State.
5    (b) The State Superintendent of Education may prepare and
6make available to all school boards instructional materials,
7including those established by the Public Broadcasting
8Service, which may be used as guidelines for development of a
9unit of instruction under this Section. However, each
10individual school board shall determine the minimum amount of
11instructional time that qualifies as a unit of instruction
12satisfying the requirements of this Section.
13    (c) The regional superintendent of schools shall monitor a
14school district's compliance with this Section's curricular
15requirements during annual compliance visits.".
