SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

605 ILCS 5/4-225 new

Amends the Illinois Highway Code. Requires the Department of Transportation, local authorities, or any responsible entity to erect and maintain hazard bars for all viaducts and underpasses with a clearance of less than 15 feet. Provides that the hazard bar shall hang at the same clearance level as the viaduct or underpass and at least 500 feet in front of the viaduct or underpass to alert motorists.

AN ACT concerning transportation.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 5. The Illinois Highway Code is amended by adding Section 4-225 as follows:

(605 ILCS 5/4-225 new)

Sec. 4-225. Hazard bars required. The Department, local authority, or responsible entity shall erect and maintain a hazard bar for viaducts or underpasses with a clearance of less than 15 feet. The hazard bar shall hang at the same clearance level as the viaduct or underpass and at least 500 feet in front of the viaduct or underpass to alert motorists.
