| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Murray Parents | 4 | | Association on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, The Murray Parents Association was founded in | 6 | | October 1971; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, As part of its mission, the Murray Parents | 8 | | Association members work to promote the general welfare of the | 9 | | residents of the Murray Center and foster the development of | 10 | | programs on their behalf; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, The Murray Parents Association advises and aids | 12 | | parents in finding solutions to their problems as well as | 13 | | helps to coordinate their efforts and activities; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, The Murray Parents Association encourages | 15 | | research and actively works to help the public gain a better | 16 | | understanding of the problems associated with developmental | 17 | | disabilities, as the association serves as a clearinghouse for | 18 | | gathering and disseminating information and cooperating with | 19 | | the public, with private and religious agencies, and with | 20 | | professional groups; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, There are 252 residents at the Murray Center, and | 2 | | over half of these residents have called Murray home for at | 3 | | least 20 years; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, These individuals have many complex needs that | 5 | | are well met by the Murray Center staff; more than half have a | 6 | | dual diagnosis of a developmental disability and a mental | 7 | | illness; serious behavioral issues are well managed at the | 8 | | Murray Center; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Nearly half, approximately 45%, of the Murray | 10 | | Center residents are non-ambulatory; many cannot express | 11 | | themselves verbally and understand very little of the world | 12 | | around them; medical issues are prevalent and complicate even | 13 | | further the labor intensive needs of these individuals; some | 14 | | residents are completely dependent on others for every need; | 15 | | and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The 24-hour nursing care provided at the Murray | 17 | | Center is essential to the well-being of many of its | 18 | | residents; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, When then-Governor Quinn announced plans to close | 20 | | the Murray Center in 2012, his attempts were unsuccessful as a | 21 | | result of the efforts made by the Murray Parents Association; | 22 | | and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Since that time, the Murray Parents Association | 2 | | has continued to work tirelessly to help others understand the | 3 | | value and importance of the Murray Center; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, For 50 years, the Murray Parents Association | 5 | | members have volunteered their time to promote the general | 6 | | welfare of the residents of the Murray Center and foster the | 7 | | development of programs on their behalf; therefore, be it
| 8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 9 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 10 | | we congratulate the Murray Parents Association on its 50th | 11 | | anniversary; and be it further
| 12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 13 | | presented to the Murray Parents Association on its 50th | 14 | | anniversary as an expression of our esteem and respect.
