1    AN ACT concerning agriculture.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Farm Fresh Schools Program Act is amended
5by changing Sections 10 and 15 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 124/10)
7    Sec. 10. Farm Fresh Schools Program. The Department of
8Agriculture, in cooperation with the State Board of Education
9and the Department of Public Health, shall create the Farm
10Fresh Schools Program. The intent of the Program is to reduce
11obesity and improve nutrition and public health, as well as
12strengthen local agricultural economies by increasing access
13to and promoting the consumption of locally grown fruits, and
14vegetables, and minimally processed fresh foods in schools and
15increasing physical activities and programs that promote pupil
16wellness.

19    Sec. 15. Grants; matching funds.
20    (a) The Department of Agriculture and the State Board of
21Education shall jointly administer a process to review grant
22proposals and award grants on a competitive basis to eligible

1applicants to implement the Farm Fresh Schools Program.
2    (b) The first 6 grants awarded pursuant to the Farm Fresh
3Schools Program shall be awarded in 6 different counties,
4including 3 urban counties and 3 rural counties with a
5significant agricultural economy.
6    (c) Beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, funds from
7the Farm Fresh Schools Program Fund or from other funding
8sources shall be used to match $1 for every $3 a school
9district spends to purchase produce or minimally processed
10fresh foods directly from a farmer, farmers' cooperative,
11farmers' market, or local food hub in this State, up to a
12maximum reimbursement of $1,000 per school district.

14    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect July 1,
152021.
