| 1 | | AN ACT concerning transportation.
| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
| 4 | | Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by | 5 | | changing Section 3-664 as follows: | 6 | | (625 ILCS 5/3-664)
| 7 | | Sec. 3-664. Gold Star license plates. Upon proper | 8 | | application, the Secretary of State shall
issue registration | 9 | | plates designated as Gold Star license plates to any Illinois | 10 | | resident who is the
surviving widow or widower, to each parent | 11 | | who is an Illinois resident, and to each Illinois resident who | 12 | | is a child, stepchild, child through adoption, brother, | 13 | | half-brother, sister, or half-sister , widower, sibling, | 14 | | daughter, son, or parent of a person who served in the Armed | 15 | | Forces of the United States and
lost his or her life while in | 16 | | service whether in peacetime or war. The
surviving widow or | 17 | | widower , each of the parents, and each child, stepchild, child | 18 | | through adoption, brother, half-brother, sister, or | 19 | | half-sister and each surviving parent, daughter, son, and | 20 | | sibling shall be issued one or more sets of registration | 21 | | plates. Registration plates issued under this
Section shall be | 22 | | for first division vehicles and second division vehicles
of | 23 | | 8,000 pounds or less. The Secretary may, in his or her |

| 1 | | discretion, allow the plates to be issued as vanity or | 2 | | personalized plates in accordance with Section 3-405.1 of this | 3 | | Code. No registration fee shall be required from a surviving | 4 | | widows, widowers, parents, or children of persons widow, | 5 | | widower, or parent of a person who served in the Armed Forces | 6 | | of the United States : and
lost his or her life while in service | 7 | | while in wartime.
| 8 | | (1) who lost their lives during World War I, World War | 9 | | II, or during any subsequent period of armed hostilities | 10 | | in which the United States was engaged before July 1, | 11 | | 1958; | 12 | | (2) who lost or lose their lives after June 30, 1958: | 13 | | while engaged in military operations involving conflict | 14 | | with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with | 15 | | friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict in | 16 | | which the United States is not a belligerent party against | 17 | | an opposing armed force; or | 18 | | (3) who lost or lose their lives after March 28, 1973, | 19 | | as a result of: an international terrorist attack against | 20 | | the United States or a foreign nation friendly to the | 21 | | United States, recognized as such an attack by the | 22 | | Secretary of Defense; or military operations while serving | 23 | | outside the United States (including the commonwealths, | 24 | | territories, and possessions of the United States) as part | 25 | | of a peacekeeping force. | 26 | | (Source: P.A. 102-106, eff. 1-1-22 .)
